Middle School North students in Ms. Balmes’ social studies class completed their immigration and industrialism unit, and now are focusing on the problems that came after that period, such as child labor. Students learned about the plight of the Breaker Boys in the coal mining industries. Not only did the students get to see and feel coal, but they were also able to analyze the concerns brought forth by muckraker Lewis Hine with regards to the Breaker Boys. Needless to say, the students discovered that they are grateful to be living in 2018.
