Hawthorn Hosts an Evening with the Board

Hawthorn School District 73 is inviting the community to attend an Evening with the Board on Wednesday, February 21, at 7:00 p.m. at Hawthorn Middle School South, 600 N. Aspen Drive in Vernon Hills, IL. The event will focus on how to solve the District’s present and future space needs.  The event will include a presentation and an opportunity for community members to provide their feedback and advice to the Board of Education.

The school district is growing. Over the next 10 years, it is projected to welcome approximately 700 more students. By 2026, its enrollment will reach more than 5,000 students, representing a more than 30 percent increase since 2008.  Hawthorn’s facilities have either been at capacity or above capacity for the past six years. Administrators have made numerous adaptations to manage space, including adding a portable containing two classrooms at Elementary South, and conducting gym in the cafeteria and hallways of the middle schools.

Childcare will be provided.  Spanish translators will be present. If you need childcare, please register by February 19. Send an email to:

Hundreds Visit Soup Kitchen

Desperately poor people found their way into the Robert Collins Soup Kitchen, hoping for a free meal and a helping hand. They were hungry, their clothes were tattered and soiled, and some lacked shoes for their feet. This is the scene that eighth-grade students at Middle School North helped create as part of an interactive project in which students learned about soup kitchens in the time of the Great Depression. Many of the 200 students who participated immersed themselves in their roles. They told stories of how fate forced them to visit a soup kitchen. They wore dungarees and carried hobo sticks.

“I have two kids and no money,” said Victoria L.  “I was once a doctor, but I lost my job.  We now eat food out of the trash. My kids sell apples on the street for 3 cents.”

Eighth-grade teacher Kathryn Balmes led the students through the exercise.  She served cups of broth and pieces of bread. “This is an opportunity for students to understand what it is like to stand in line for food because they have nothing,” she said.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad Team Shines at Invitational

The Middle School North Science Olympiad team had a long, but fantastic day at the Rockford Christian Invitational.  They participated in 22 different events.  They won first place in Meteorology and Wright Stuff in Varsity, second place in Rocks and Minerals, and third place in Thermodynamics along with other medal placements.  Junior Varsity won first place in Anatomy Mystery Architecture, Rocks and Minerals, Wright Stuff and Thermodynamics, second place in Ecology, Experimental Design, Wright Stuff and Meteorology, and third place in Dynamic Planet and Roller Coaster, plus many other placements.

Guest Speaker Inspires Students and Staff

Eighth grade students at Middle School North listened to a presentation by Chris, who sustained a traumatic brain injury about 4 ½ years ago. He had intensive surgery and was in an induced coma for eight days. It was unclear if Chris would survive. After years of dedication and hard work, he graduated from high school and is now a junior at Columbia College. He provided words of wisdom to the eighth-grade class, encouraging them not to give up, and to do what makes them happy in life. His story was inspirational for the students and staff.
