Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Hawthorn District 73
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a framework designed to maximize the use of evidence-based prevention and intervention practices along a multi-tiered continuum, supporting the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral competence of all students.
At Hawthorn District 73, PBIS is implemented through explicit teaching, modeling, practicing, and reinforcement of positive social and behavioral expectations across all settings. This system is part of our commitment to ensuring the success of the whole child, grounded in the belief that every child deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
Key Components of PBIS at Hawthorn:
-
Explicit Teaching of Expectations: Students are taught our school-wide behavior expectations through structured lesson plans known as “Cool Tools.” These expectations emphasize the importance of all students SOARing (Safe, On-task, Act Responsibly, Respect).
-
Frequent Reinforcement: Positive behaviors are frequently reinforced using “Eagle Bucks,” a reward system that encourages students to meet the established expectations.
-
Targeted Support: When students need additional help in meeting behavior expectations, school staff provide the necessary support to ensure all students can succeed.
Through PBIS, Hawthorn fosters a positive and supportive environment that promotes the overall success and well-being of every student.
