Hawthorn Middle School North’s Garden Club is a bright spot on the grounds. In its third year now, the Garden Club members spend their afternoons sprucing up the school entrances with mums, marigolds, hostas, petunias and pansies. The students enhance the potted flowers with a sprinkle of pumpkins, gourds and pepper plants.
“I love to plant flowers and vegetables,” said Riya S., 13, about why she joined the club.
The students not only plant flowers and vegetables but they use Google Docs to track soil ingredients, which helps them determine what plants grows well in which type of soil, said Club Sponsor Joanne Silvertrust. In addition, students donate leftover vegetables to a local charity. This year the club is sponsoring a pumpkin-decorating contest at Middle School North.
The club meets weekly during the school year. During the winter months students garden indoors tending to flowers and herbs.
